The present lot comes with a plaque fixed on the inside that mentions the brand ‘Wedgwood and Sons.’ The lids of the two compartments inside are marked as ‘Black’ and ‘Green’ to designate the storage of black and green tea for convenient usage. The purpose of a tea caddy and the reason for its embellishment owes itself to the high value of tea when it was first introduced to Europe from China sometime in the 17th century. The object then became a very fashionable accessory for the drawing room of a home and eventually, a sought-after collectible today.
