Vishwanath Nageshkar belonged to the first generation of modern Indian artists. Born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra in 1910, he was of Goan origin. He moved to Mumbai and enrolled at the Sir J J School of Arts in 1927 to pursue an education in the arts, where he studied under teachers including Captain Gladstone Solomon, graduating in 1931 with a specialisation in frescoes.
