KG Subramanyan was deeply interested in the mural and was among the most dedicated purveyors of the form among post–Independence artists. He worked on The King of The Dark Chamber, a terracotta mural of monumental scale installed in the Rabindralaya building in Lucknow, between 1962-63, to commemorate the birth of Rabindranath Tagore.
