A TAHITIAN PEARL NECKLACE
Shaill Jhaveri Couture

Designed as an 18 K twisted gold cord with nine perfectly matched and graduated grey cultured Tahitian pearls, measuring 13.9 to 14.7 mm, each with a pavé-set diamond inscription that reads from left to right vipra budha nityasthayin, or 'an illuminated, awakened and eternal consciousness', suspended from a round or square-cut emerald and diamond cap, joined with a pavé-set diamond clasp suspending a single princess-cut diamond and pear-shaped emerald

Shaill Jhaveri infuses his jewelry with a visual calligraphy of the language of the soul – Sanskrit. Also "Known as 'Devabhasha' or the 'language of the Gods', it's very name means 'refined' or 'sculpted' to perfection. The language attempts to find the perfect unity of the word, the sounds and the meaning, and becomes a vehicle to express the highest spiritual truths and experiences" (Sampad and Vijay, The Wonder that is Sanskrit, Sri Aurobindo Society, Pondicherry, in association with Mapin Publishing, Ahmedabad, 2002). Here, the phrase inscribed, Vipra budha nityasthayin, means 'an illuminated, awakened and eternal consciousness'.

This piece, along with the two others by Shaill Jhaveri Couture (lot nos. 12 and 78) in this sale, are part of a new collection of one-of-a-kind pieces that the designer has entitled 'Full Circle', set to debut in 2009. A native of Mumbai, Shaill currently lives and works in New York City and explains his inspiration for the line, saying, "I wanted to do a project that explains my current state of mind, and that brought me home."
