LONG WOVEN KASHMIRI SHAWL FOR MEN

KASHMIR, 19TH CENTURY
115 x 51 in (292.1 x 129.5 cm)

Shawls from Kashmir are known for their fine wool and soft texture, and the fineness of the weave historically indicated nobility, status and royal favour. The present lot has an appealing deep red background, and is covered in fine weave featuring floral and paisley motifs. Intended to be worn by men, it has been later enhanced by an additional border that makes it a larger decorative piece. Possibly woven from pure Pashmina wool typical of the region, it is an example of the fine kanni technique of weaving from Kashmir - a painstaking and time-consuming process that results in a limited output, making these shawls extremely precious and sought-after.
