Deftly manipulating light, colour and texture, Singh is well known for his semi-impressionistic yellow-viridian stippled grassy fields, snow white streams, and trees reaching for the blue skies in the distance.

Terming himself a ‘painter of light’, Singh describes his creative process saying, “For me, the starting point is the physical elements of a landscape. From them, I derive the inspiration to handle pigments in the way one handles language to give expression to one’s subtlest thoughts and most fanciful feelings. My use of pigments gives them, I feel, a tactile quality. The flexibility of the technique I employ allows me to decipher ever-changing meaning in the waves on the water or the wind that rustles the grass” (Deep Impressions, Paramjit Singh 1994, CIMA exhibition catalogue, 1994, p. 8). In this monumental triptych, the artist employs this technique to transcend the tangible, and communicate instead the intangible elements of a summer woodland scene. Along with the lush golden-green grass and trees, the viewer is privy to Singh’s experience of the lambent sunlight that illuminates them and bracing wind that moves them.
