Describing his work, his teacher and fellow artist Jogen Chowdhury says Hussain is “…humourous, playful, satirical and uses colours with imagination. He creates curious and fantastic situations, people with unreal gestures, sometimes having faces with protruding eyes or raised hands or legs. His sense of space and colour is excellent. He creates a semi-narrative ‘non-sense’ situation, which ultimately portrays images of social absurdities and decadence of contemporary life and living” (Farhad Hussain, Sarjan Art Gallery exhibition catalogue, 2005, p.6).

Juxtaposing the mundane with the unfamiliar, Hussain weaves humour, eroticism and irony into his colourful vignettes of daily life. He explains, “My main weapon is humor. It overthrows the romantic mode of consumption that we would otherwise be happy with. Are we to laugh at my images? Or should we just enjoy them voyeuristically?
