Born in Assam, Bhabesh C Sanyal was a painter and sculptor who witnessed the changes and challenges in India - both politically as well as within the Modern art movement - over the course of a century. He studied in Bengal and then moved to Lahore in 1929, where he set up the Lahore College of Art in 1937. The artist, though he did not subscribe to any particular school of art, had an affinity for the Bengal School, and he was a teacher to prominent Indian Modernists including Satish Gujral and Krishen Khanna. Sanyal's paintings often depicted human hardships, influenced by the violence surrounding him in his childhood and later during the Partition of the country, but he was equally well known for his masterful mountainous landscapes, as seen in the present lot. These were likely influenced by the increasing time he spent in Himachal Pradesh in later years, where he set up an artists' colony in Andretta. Sanyal passed away in New Delhi in 2003.
