This later work by Ram Kumar was painted in 2001 and reflects both, his early figurative phase, and the post-1960s abstract landscapes that became synonymous with his oeuvre. From the 2000s, Kumar returned to figuration, after four decades of purely abstract landscapes. The present lot depicts the figure of a man in the foreground-who harkens back to his 1950s works of melancholic men and women-but is painted with the sweeping swatches of fractured colour which characterised his abstract works. The background hints at a small hamlet in the midst of a snow bank, surrounded by trees. The colour palette of browns and greys, highlighted by splashes of white and blue, is reminiscent of the artist's Ladakh landscapes from the 1970s and 1990s. Kumar's paintings reflected his extensive travels, and the present lot seems to incorporate particular elements from the disparate lands which the artist visited over his lifetime.
