PROVENANCE
The Estate of Khorshed Karanjavala

Indra, the king of the demi-gods, sits on a simhasan (throne) in the sukhasana pose, where the body is held erect with one leg folded parallel to the ground and the other held in repose. The rain god is depicted with his attributes - in his upper left hand he wields the vajra (the thunderbolt), and an elephant goad in the other. At his feet is the mythological white elephant Airavata who carries him. The present lot is carved out of marble, which allows for intricate detailing.
