UTTAR PRADESH, CIRCA 9TH CENTURY
Red Sandstone
19.75 in (50.1 cm) high

NON-EXPORTABLE REGISTERED ANTIQUITY

PROVENANCE
The Estate of Khorshed Karanjavala

Shiva is seated in lalitasana, with one leg crossed and the other pendent. His hair is tied up in a jatamukuta. He is clad in a striated garment, held about his waist by a jewelled belt. In his upper right hand, he holds his attribute, the trishul or trident. In his upper left he holds an object which seems of much interest to the snake which coils around his neck. Shiva holds Parvati, who is seated on his lap, affectionately turning her face towards him. Her disc-shaped earrings and Shiva's distended earlobes are indicative of an early stylistic influence. Sheltered by their feet are small, endearing carvings of their sons, Kartikeya and Ganesha. Nandi, the bull, and vahana of Shiva and Parvati, is seen to the left, gazing up in reverence.
