PROVENANCE
The Estate of Khorshed Karanjavala

Palace scenes and vignettes from the Jataka Tales were a popular theme in Gandharan sculpture. This grey schist relief shows two musicians in the centre. The figure on the right plays a pipe, while the other holds a stringed instrument resembling a lute. They are both clad in dhotis, and their hair is tied in a top knot. A Corinthian column is framed the left, and to the right is a small built form that might be a shrine or hut. The legs of a prostrate figure are visible in front of this architectural feature.

Writing about reliefs depicting similar scenes, Isao Kurita observes, "There are many banquet scenes depicted in Gandhara. Sometimes banquet scenes are combined with music and dance... [which] are often represented simultaneously... flutes, lutes, harps and drums are represented in the music scenes..." (Kurita, Gandharan Art II, p. 321)
