The Tandan Collection

This scene from the Ramayana most likely depicts the slaying of Maricha and Subahu. The two rakshasas ceaselessly interrupted a yagna, or ritual, which sage Vishwamitra attempted to conduct. Vishwamitra enlists the help of Rama and Lakshmana, who slay the two demons and ensure that the yagna is successfully completed.

The painting shows the two slain demons on the banks of the river Sarayu. Rama is identifiable by his blue skin tone, and Lakshmana stands guard behind him. The two rishis, one being Vishwamitra, pour offerings into the sacred fire under the watchful eyes of the princes.
