PROVENANCE
The Tandan Collection

This is an idealised portrait of a nayika, dressed in the classic orange attire and jewellery typical of such depictions. She raises her arms languorously, her head turned to the left. This is an iconic gesture which suggests that she is yearning for her lover, as seen in other miniatures depicting similar nayikas. The nayikas in Rajasthani painting were representations of the types described by Kesava Das in the Rasikapriya.
