Rupamati and Baz Bahadur's tale is one of heroism and tragedy. A Hindu courtesan, Rupmati was in love with Baz Bahadur, a Pathan, whose fort was stormed by the Mughals. "The romance of Rupmati and Baz Bahadur was a popular subject with the Indian painters and here we see the legendary lovers in the seclusion of the lush and undulating landscape of Nurpur...The young raja Prithvi Singh of Nurpur (born 1740) is shown here in the role of the gallant. If only on the pretext of talking to him, the chic Rupmati has sharply turned her face backwards, in the typical Nurpur manner to show her fine profile...Inspite of the deep romantic mood of the picture, this could not have been their first encounter as betrayed by the royal hawk who is now completely at ease having got over the initial excitement of their earlier meetings." (Tandan, Indian Miniature Painting, p. 118)
