A RARE LATE VICTORIAN NON-MECHANICAL REFRIGERATOR

Teakwood, glass, iron, brass hardware
80 x 44 x 27 in (203.2 x 111.8 x 68.6 cm)

Featuring a breathtaking back that includes a decorative pediment with carved accents a large mirror flanked by convenient shelves. A concealed section of the work top opens to reveal a capacious storage compartment with insulated walls, a metal tray near the top to hold ice and cold water with ventilation for cold air to be circulated around the storage compartments in the other sections, a tap for dispensing cold drinking water, and features a draining mechanism and catch pan to hold the melting water.

Iceboxes such as these were considered luxury during the mid 19th century to 1930s which was a period before electric refrigerators became popular, when ice was harvested on an industrial scale and it was a common sight to see ice wagons making regular door-to-door deliveries of ice.
