A FOLIO FROM A RAAGMALA SERIES

Malwa School, c. 1680
Opaque watercolour on paper
8.5 x 5.5 in (21.6 x 14 cm)

REGISTERED ANTIQUITY-NON-EXPORTABLE

Provenance: Property of a Gentleman, Mumbai

The brilliant colours of the Malwa School have mesmerised many a collector. This region in Central India was a flourishing centre of painting in the 17th Century. In the current work, the artist has attempted to capture a scene in a court at night. The architectural style resembles that of the Mughals, and only one chamber of the palace can be seen here. We see a couple seated, lost in conversation. A maiden stands outside, holding a fan made of peacock feathers. A lotus pond lies in front of the chamber, with lotuses lined up in the dark waters. At the far back, ferns reach out to the sky, and trees populate the background.

Malwa paintings are rarely found in a good condition. This painting is well-preserved, having maintained its colours.
