His oeuvre draws heavily from his native rural surroundings, as the people of his village morph into the primary subjects of his compositions. In particular, the Telangana women are often represented in exaggerated, almost caricaturised forms. His preoccupation with his subject matter can be traced to his childhood, when he became fascinated by the travelling theatre groups where the male artists impersonate female characters on stage. He creates figures replete in traditional finery, but also imbibed with a somewhat improbable sensuality that is underscored by his use of primary colours. Vaikuntam's women exude a primal strength while maintaining a matronly femininity.
