Souza`s lines are a vital feature of his aesthetic. Often considered at their most evocative in his renditions of the human form, Souza`s landscapes are equally fascinating in their manipulation of the line. In the Cherry Tree, Souza`s bold black lines create a sense of structure reminiscent of Cézanne. The solidity of the houses forms an exciting contrast with the fluid red brushstrokes used for the cherry tree. The painting possesses a sense of merriment that is unusual in Souza`s oeuvre.
