PROVENANCE
From an Important Private Collection, Mumbai
This court painting from the early 19th century brings to life the Durbar of Maharaja Mansinghji of Jodhpur. In the centre of the composition, Maharaja Mansinghji is shown regally seated on a large silver throne. He exudes authority and magnificence in his resplendent royal attire. The inscription describes the event as a meeting between Maharaja Mansinghji and Fateh Chandji. The fact that this meeting was documented by commissioning a painting and having the event inscribed shows that it would have had significance. Noteworthy features are the long flowing jamas, Jodhpuri headgear, and facial features typical of this school. A close comparable of this painting is in the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. Another example can be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
