PROVENANCE
Formerly in the Frei Collection, Switzerland
This unusual frieze has a frontal depiction of an elephant with a very typical Gandharan lion at the apex. This composite sculpture would most likely have once been the end of an arm handle. The clarity of the carving, condition and the unusual, intriguing subject make it a delight. The three-dimensional nature of the work makes it an ideal desktop display. To understand stylistic elements of Gandharan lions, refer to the pair of lions in the Asian Art Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
