The Illuminated books of the middle ages. Pictorial Ornamentation from the IV th to the XVII th centuries - Henry Noel Humphreys and Owen Jones - The Design Sale
  Quick Zoom | Large

The Illuminated books of the middle ages. Pictorial Ornamentation from the IV th to the XVII th centuries

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans 1849

(4)nn pp (letterpress & chromolithographic title) + 20 pp (text + 2 uncoloured plate of 13 ornaments + xxxix chromolithographed plates (plates are pasted and printed on coated paper); all plates are protected by a thin leaf and preceded by a text leaf with explanations (some of these text leaves have a chromolithographic border); (complete edition); rebound in half leather with marbled boards, spine with five raised bands and gilt title along with blind stamped decorative patterns, new end papers, all edges gilt.
15.2 x 11.2 x 1.6 in (38 x 28 x 4 cm)

H. N. Humphreys is principally known as a designer of elaborate bindings made of wood and papier mâché.

This is a splendid copy of one of the highlights of 19th century chromolithographic art. The book is illustrated by a series of examples, of the size of the originals, selected from the most beautiful Mss. of the various periods, executed on stone and printed in colour by Owen Jones.

First published in 1845 as a quarto edition, the present lot is a stunning folio edition. Michael Twyman, in his study on chromolithography (p. 153), rates this book as a turning point in the technique of chromolithography and speculates that the stipple technique used here might have inspired the French impressionist painters using the ‘pointillism’ technique.

The Grammar of Ornament - Owen Jones - The Design Sale
  Quick Zoom | Large
Owen Jones (1809 - 1874)

The Grammar of Ornament

London: Bernard Quaritch, 1910

[4], 157 pp (text), 112 chromolithographed plates including the title page and numerous black and white illustrations; original gilt-stamped burgundy cloth, with gilt lettering on spine and front cover, beveled edges, all edges gilt.
13.6 x 9.8 x 2.2 in (34 x 24.5 x 5.5 cm)

Owen Jones’ Grammar of Ornament was first published in 1856 in the form of a lavish folio that highlighted stunning patterns, motifs, and ornaments across 112 illustrated plates. Considered to be a design masterpiece, the book was a monumental publishing project that managed to achieve unseen standards in colour printing. Each illustration in the folio explored the design principles behind the architecture, textiles, manuscripts, and decorative arts present across 19 cultural periods, with the final chapter paying tribute to the beauty of the natural world. The book continues to remain in print even 150 years later – a true testament to its enduring appeal when it comes to design.

Authored by Jones, whose studies on colour theory, geometry and form remain an inspiration for designers till date, this book was his way of convincing the designers and tastemakers of the Victorian era of the need to look towards history to form the foundation for good, modern design. The purpose of Grammar of Ornament, thus, was to aid young and upcoming designers to use the underlying principles of the older decorative arts as inspiration in their own work.

One Thousand and One Initial Letters Designed and Illuminated by Owen Jones

London: Day & Son, 1864

17.2 x 12.2 x 4.8 in (43 x 30.7 x 12 cm)

Interesting decorative volume.

Day and Son, lithographers to Queen Victoria, published this work in 1864.
