F N Souza’s life and artistic career were defined by rebellion, innovation, and an unrelenting, almost compulsive drive to create. Born in 1924 in Saligao, Goa, he was expelled from school twice in his youth. He was fiercely anti-establishment and joined the Communist Party of India in 1947. Finding its ideology restrictive to his creative freedom, he left the party soon after and went on to co?found the Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG), one of the most influential collectives to emerge in post-Independence India. The group played a key role in shaping a new visual language for Indian modernism-one that rejected the academic naturalism of the colonial era while reconciling Indian artistic traditions with contemporary Western practices. The artist’s centenary in 2024 has drawn renewed attention to his legacy, with exhibitions such as In/Of Goa: Souza at 100 (Saffronart in association with Grosvenor Gallery) reaffirming his pivotal place in the canon of modern Indian art. His practice spanned both East and West, drawing from European modernism, classical Indian art, and the vibrant folk traditions of Goa. Yet, as critic John Berger observed in 1955, Souza “straddles many traditions but serves none.” Souza’s imagery ranges widely, from distorted heads and violent depictions of the Crucifixion to sensual, statuesque nudes and tender mother-and-child compositions. His strict Catholic upbringing was marked by what he saw as the conflict between the eroticism of classical Indian art and the repressive teachings of the Church, a duality that significantly influenced his art. Across these subjects, his work oscillates between the sacred and the profane, the grotesque and the darkly humorous. He confronted religion, sexuality, and institutional authority with unflinching directness, frequently subverting Catholic iconography to expose the hypocrisies of both Church and state. At the same time, his art is also a testament to his formidable skill as a draughtsman. Throughout his career, Souza consistently challenged the boundaries of conventional genres of art, particularly portraiture, landscape, and still life. His years in Bombay, London, and New York broadened the geographical and conceptual scope of his practice, situating Indian modernism within an international discourse. In doing so, he redefined the possibilities of painting in India, leaving behind a body of work that remains original, provocative, and often challenging but always compelling. Lots 53 - 85 in this sale not only reflect some of Souza’s best-known themes but also offer insight into his artistic process and private world through a selection of personal effects from his studio.“Figurative art presents no problems for Souza because he has succeeded in creating images which are entirely personal, yet recognisable at the same time.”
