Born in 1979 in Mumbai, Tushar Potdar completed his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, with a specialization in Painting, from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai, in 2001. Potdar has the distinct ability to turn the mundane into the special, and his art is a tribute to the everyday things that are often overlooked, yet impossible to live without.
The physicality of these objects is prominent in his work, with large fans, water mugs and even locks drawing the viewer’s attention. Attributing fantastical qualities to these commonplace objects, Potdar removes them from their ordinary connotations, celebrating them through his art. Assigning them a mystical element, he manages to render these objects alluring, making the viewer desire them, only to realize their ubiquity later. Potdar keeps his colours flat and simple, perhaps to ensure that the focus remains on the objects he portrays.
Tushar Potdar’s work has been featured in exhibitions including 'Navsar 2009' at Shridharni Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2009; ‘Illusion’ at Osmosis Gallery, Mumbai, in 2009; ‘The Triumph of Suburbia' at Osmosis Gallery, Mumbai, in 2008; 'Millennium Turks: Envisaging Contemporary India' at the Trident, Gurgaon, in 2008; and ‘Contemporary Indian Art’ at AR Contemporary Gallery, Milan, in 2007. Potdar has also participated in the ‘Harmony Show’ at the Nehru Centre, Mumbai, in 2007.
