A young graduate from the Sir J.J. School Art, Mumbai, Tanuja Rane specializes in the field of printmaking. Her etchings display her mastery over the medium and understanding of the subtleties that the medium has to offer.
Working in the small format, her early work brings to life the world of animals, her special focus being the cat. She says, "All creatures live in harmony and creatures with human feelings and emotions are conversed within my work. It`s a world that is watched with intimacy to view small vignettes in my etchings about creatures that speak another language. There is animated character behind them." She infuses her representations of the cat with a fun, by juxtaposing them with images of fish for example. The use of color is especially noteworthy, the bright yellows, blues and pinks in their vibrancy.
In 1999, the artist won a scholarship to live and work at the Kanoria Center for Arts in Ahmedabad, and in 2001-01 she was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi scholarship for printmaking. Her solo shows include `Me-Mom` at Chemould Prescott Road, Mumbai, in 2008; `Recent Works` at Glasgow Print Studio Gallery – III , Glasgow, in 2002; and `Prints` at Chitra Kala Parishad, Bangalore, in 1999. Rane`s works have also featured in a number of group shows including those held at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), Mumbai, in 2005; Gallery Espace, New Delhi, in 2005; and Bajaj Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2004.
The artist lives and works in Mumbai.
