Bold, simple, immaculate - are a few adjectives that would describe
Sunil and his work. They catch your eye even if you are just passing
by, and this glimpse takes you into a journey of thought and
reflection. Every time you view Sunil's paintings they reveal a new
facet, pushing you into a new realm of thought. "A work of art should
not set boredom", believes Sunil. He works like a sculptor adding &
subtracting upon the surface of his paintings - the color is built
through a series of layers, which at times are also scratched out. He
incorporates the human figure in his paintings in the same vein -
building it in and out of the surface. Initially, these figures were
mere spectators in the composition of the artwork, but now they appear
to be active participants, asserting their presence and subtly
revealing the mystery behind their form.
The frames of Sunil's paintings are not mere boundaries; they are an
integral part of the entire work of art. At times it is the frame, more
appropriately the found object that inspires him to do a painting.
Sunil enjoys adding dimension to his works, an unusual curved surface
instead of a flat one, a molded back to make the painting move away
from the wall, a form of twisted metal or an old signboard. Even
through the elaborate and dramatic use of materials, his paintings
inherently are bereft of any superfluous details.
In his latest series Sunil has painted books, but books, which are made
of wood. The enchanting hand-painted cover of these books compels you
to try and take a peek inside, but the wooden book cannot be opened,
leaving the observer only with the imagination of what might have been
there!
Sunil is continuously changing himself and the world around him. He is
experimenting with new forms of expressions, and in the process forcing
us to delve further into his magical and mysterious art. Sunil is an
artist for the new millennium!

Interview on June, 24 2000, at his studio.
His beginnings as a painter...
As a student of Applied Art, my area of specialization was illustration. The Times of India would feature my illustrations
regularly - these caught the eye of Mr. Harsh Geonka ( a patron of Indian art), who commissioned me to do a few paintings for him.Impressed by my work Mr. Geonka encouraged me to exhibit my works. I told him that I was a novice and didn't know much about exhibitions, let alone organizing them. Mr. Goenka graciously responded by organizing and my first exhibition. Since then there has been no looking back for me.
On his move from mainstream advertising to painting.
"It was very easy for me to move from illustration to painting, as my style of illustrations were not typical of that in advertising. I had developed a style wherein I tried to break free from the conventional method of illustration.
His paintings...
"People are an abiding influence on me. They aren't meticulous recorded appearances for me, but are simple in their form, who transmit intense feelings trying to reveal their identity".
He characterizes his style as...
"Simplistic and graphic (a hangover from his advertising days) to create something innovative and interesting is my primary concern. I like to experiment - conventionality is not my cup of tea.
The frames of his paintings
I go hunting for them in "chor bazaar" (the "thieves" market in Mumbai,India), "Kurla market", or any place where I can find old and interesting objects, be it a name plate of an office or a vector scale.I buy them all. My wife designs most of the frames for my paintings, and I have no qualms about acknowledging this fact.
Titles for his works
I don't title my paintings or my exhibitions. I like to leave them untitled - I feel that if I title my paintings I am restricting them, and in turn loose out on the vastness of the subject. My paintings are quite simple thus a viewer can come to his own conclusions, and create his own title. This gives me immense pleasure!
