Sudhir Kasliwal is an accomplished jeweller, photographer and collector. Born in Jaipur, he belongs to the fifth generation of the royal jewellers who were invited to the Pink City in the middle of the 19th century by the erstwhile ruler to develop the jewellery industry. Sudhir Kasliwal is an accomplished jeweller, photographer and collector. Born in Jaipur, he belongs to the fifth generation of the royal jewellers who were invited to the Pink City in the middle of the 19th century by the erstwhile ruler to develop the jewellery industry. He now heads the family firm Gem Palace which was founded in 1852, crafting exquisite pieces of precious jewellery.

Photography first bloomed as a hobby during his school days at St. Xavier’s, Jaipur, eventually turning into a consuming passion for Sudhir. His evocative portraiture captures the ephemeral. His trained eye spots beauty in the most ordinary of settings and like a painter he lifts out scenes from the ever changing kaleidoscope of people and nature, rendering them immortal.

Sudhir’s use of natural light, technical expertise and the keen poignancy of his photographs have found them a way into the collections of connoisseurs. His pictures are like excerpts from untold stories - A camel groaning under the collective weight of a score of scrambling villagers, a tree sprouting colourful turbans of villagers craning their necks to get a view of a sporting event. These are just some unforgettable glimpses of the soul of genius behind the lens as much as before it. Seasonal fairs and festivals have been his favourite hunting ground, as they reunite different strands of the cultural fabric. These forages have yielded some of the best studies of numerous tribes of Rajasthan – the Bhils, the Garasiyas and the Gadia Luhars.

His pictures have received international recognition and have appeared regularly in leading journals world over. His photographs were exhibited at the Festivals of India in the USSR and in the First International Photo Exhibition organized by the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society, New Delhi. He was commissioned by the Government of Rajasthan to shoot aerial pictures of Jaipur for a special brochure to be presented to visiting state dignitary, U.S. President Bill Clinton. He is the only photographer to have the privilege of accompanying and shooting pictures of the President himself at Amber Fort, Jaipur.

A skilled photographer, Sudhir has received numerous awards and accolades. In 1987 he was awarded at FOTOFEST an All India Photo Competition organized by the Government of India. In 1988 he received an award for his photograph “People on the Move” by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In 1989 the Tamra Patra by the Governor of Rajasthan was conferred on Sudhir, for documenting the landscapes of Rajasthan. In 1990 he was presented an award for “Promoting the position of Youth and Women.” In 1992, he received a UNESCO award for his photographs in an exhibition of photographs of Asia. In 1993 he received yet another award in an International Photography Competition organized by the UN. An avid traveler, his broad photographic repertoire extends to include other Asian and European countries. Glimpses of Sudhir Kasliwal’s vibrant worldview in photographs from his visit to the mystical land of China are currently being exhibited at the Lallgarh Palace Museum in Bikaner.
