This relationship between Uttpatti and Light forms the basis of my work." From using ink on paper, Hyderabad-based Shrikant W Kolhe has advanced to using oil on canvas. While the medium has changed, the themes of his creations have not been affected. One can notice the striking play of light which is a recurring theme in all paintings. "I view light as an important source of life. Every object has a form and a dimension because of light. The Play with light has been the main focus of my work," Shrikant says. This preoccupation with light also explains the consistent use of black and white in his paintings. Shrikant's paintings also reveal a hawk's eye precision for detail and a stark realism that's hard to ignore. Another recurring theme in his paintings is the image based on "Shiviinga" or Tantric Art. "I am strongly influenced by the concept of 'Uttpatti' or creation symbolizing the genesis of all living creations," says Shrikant. Born and brought up in Nagpur, Shrikant received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in 1987 and in the same year organized his first solo exhibition. Currently working with the Corporate Communications division of an IT organization, Shrikant has around 12 years experience in advertising. "I get my bread and butter from my job and creative satisfaction from my paintings. I hope to be a full time painter some time in the future," Shrikant says. Shrikant has participated in several important National Art exhibitions including the prestigious Millennium All India Art Exhibition, 2000. He has also received various awards including First Prize in Kaladirgha Art Exhibition, Tunser, 1987. Like many artists, he too, initially,faced opposition from his family in pursuing art as a career. However, thanks to the support of his elder brother, today he finds immense creative fulfillment in following his true calling painting. Shrikant's creative instincts are always in a state of flux. The pursuit of perfection, it seems is a life-long affair as he constantly improves and sharpens his skills. As he says, "My best is yet to come."
