Sachida Nagdev was born in the city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh in 1940. his early interest in art was sparked by both the great architectural and cultural heritage of his state, as well as the urban art that surrounded him. At the tender age of nine, Nagdev was obtaining an informal training in painting from local signboard painters in Ujjain, having begged them to show him how they worked.
Later, in 1961, Nagdev moved to Mumbai and studied painting more formally at the Sir J.J. School of Art there, receiving a general diploma in the subject. Since he was extremely interested in India’s culture and artistic traditions and heritage, the artist went on to do a postgraduate course in Ancient Indian History in 1962 as well as one in Painting later in 1970 from the Vikram University in Ujjain. Under the guidance of Dr. V.S. Wakankar, an extremely renowned Indian archaeologist, Nagdev worked in North India for a short period and discovered and copied prehistoric rock shelters there.
Nagdev has held more than 30 one-man exhibitions in most major cities in India and in France, Germany and Japan. He has participated at the Indian Triennale, New Delhi in 1974, the Biennale, Bhopal in 1986 and 1992 and the Osaka Triennale in 1990 and 1993. He is the recipient of many awards and his paintings are at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and the Contemporary Art Museum at Osaka, Japan.
He lives and works in Bhopal.
Sachida Nagdev’s honours include receiving the first Amrita Shergill Fellowship from the Government of Madhya Pradesh for creative art in 1976 and a Government of India fellowship in 1984-86 for research in the area of India’s painting traditions. This artists is widely traveled in India, Nepal, Europe, Japan and Middle East and has exhibited his works in national and international level exhibitions. He has also won the Yomiuri Telecasting Award at the Osaka Triennale of 1990 in Japan, and his paintings feature in the collections of museums and individuals in India and abroad.
