Sawalaram Laxman Haldankar was born on 25th November, 1882 in Savantwadi, Maharashtra. He studied at the Sir J.J School of Art where he trained under Cecil Burns and M. V. Dhurandhar. Sawalaram Laxman Haldankar was born on 25th November, 1882 in Savantwadi, Maharashtra. He studied at the Sir J.J School of Art where he trained under Cecil Burns and M. V. Dhurandhar. He distinguished himself quite early in his career and secured prizes and medals for exhibitions held in Madras, Bombay and Simia. In 1908, he started the Haldankar Fine Art Institute in Mumbai. In 1915, he exhibited at the Royal British Society of Arts, London. With the co- operation of other artists he started the Art Society of India in 1918 and was its President for many years. He was also President of the Maharashtra Chitrakar Mandal. He was commissioned to paint portraits of some of the most eminent personalities of his day such as Jagannath Sunkersett, Sir John Beaumont and Lady and Sir Leslie Wilson.
Sawalaram Laxman Haldankar died on 30th May 1968.
