Born in 1969 in Kolkata, Pulak Sanpui graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, with Bachelor’s degree in Painting in 1996, and master’s degree in printmaking in 1998.
Botany and the natural world form the core of Sanpui’s inspiration, and this is apparent from his works. He draws his inspiration from detailed botanical renderings, but what makes his works interesting is that he heightens the drama by mixing flora and fauna from various regions, at times alien yet all too familiar, and at once alluring and intimidating. The artist thus manages to create a sense of alienation as well as recognition which provokes the viewer to question his landscape and, by extension, his reality.
Sanpui received a Scholarship from the Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad, in 1999, and held his first solo show at Nazar Art Gallery, Baroda, in 2000. His work has been a part of several group exhibitions including 'Cutting Chai' at Sarjan Art Gallery, Vadodara, in 2009; '[Obtuse-Acute]' at Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, also in 2009; ‘Rainbow of Imaginings’ at Past Modern and Tumeric Earth, Mumbai; ‘Mapping Baroda’ at the Art Room, New Delhi; ‘Artists of Baroda’ at Gallery Art World, Chennai; ‘AQ @ Priyasri’ at Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai; ‘Tales of Picture’ at Gallery Art Elements, New Delhi, all in 2007; and 'ArtWatch' at Gallery 88, Kolkata, in 2006.
Sanpui has also participated in the ‘Feb Show' hosted by Uttarayan at Bayer ABS Ltd. Gallery, Baroda, in 2004; the Annual Exhibition hosted by the Birla Academy of Arts and Culture, Mumbai, in 1997-98; and the All India Exhibition of Art, Amritsar, in 1997.
