Prithvi Soni was born in 1949 in Harayana, and is one amongst those Indian artists who have accurately represented in their renderings, the true expressive vistas and peoples of rural India.
Soni did not study painting at an art school but for a year at the Rang Roop Studios in Dalhousie in 1965, and after this sparked his interest for another couple of years first at the Shri Nisad Ahamad Bharati in Delhi and then under the late painter, Shri Ramkumarji. The subdued colors and soft strokes he employs when he paints the people of villages in Northern India are surely the most distinctive features of his work. Like most other artists who paint village scenes and subjects, Prithvi Soni’s preferred medium of painting is oil and as a surface he always uses canvas.
The faces of his subjects, most often Rajasthani women, in his paintings are truly as expressive as one would find them in real life. And in order to better convey the subtle emotions their faces show, Soni prefers muted tones like browns, greys and ochre to dominate his canvases, rather than the loud reds and yellows that are so typical of Rajasthan. Soni also refrains from mixing his media and has perfected the soft brush and oil technique that he is well known for.
Beginning with his first solo show at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai in 1992, Prithvi Soni has today exhibited in more than 50 shows in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, London, Nairobi, Lagos and Hong Kong. His paintings have also been used in Indian movies by noted filmmaker Subhash Ghai and film actress and filmmaker Hema Malini. His works are featured in many private collections in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, London, Lagos, U.S.A and Hong Kong.
The Artist lives and works in Mumbai.
