Hailing from a town named Silchar, Assam, Mahmud Husain Laskar moved to Shantiniketan, West Bengal, at a young age of 11. He pursued his bachelors in Fine Arts in painting from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati, and masters in the same from College of Art, New Delhi.
Taking inspiration from master figurative artists like KG Subramanyan, Jogen Chowdhury and Bhupen Khakhar, Husain’s works are heavily reliant on his created figures that float around the pictorial space to tell stories. He declares, “I am anti-structure”. Further, his compositions draw on the subconscious, as he explains, ““Fantasy plays an important part in my work… Dreams are always churning inside me , thousands of dreams, for life, for the future, my past, my present, my insecurities, all of these are reflected in one section that I call the Reflection series.”
Husain was awarded the 48th National Academy Award, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2005; Scholarship to Young Artist, Department of Culture, Govt. of India, in 2003; the Camlin Award in professional category by Camlin Art foundation (3rd Northern region) in 2003 and the Ravi Jain Memorial Fellowship, Dhoomimal Gallery, New Delhi in 2002. His works are a part of a number of collections such as Muller and Plate Gallery, Munich; Gibsone Jessop Gallery, Toronto; Tasveer Foundation, Bangalore; Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Seagull Foundation for the Arts, Kolkata, amongst many other private collections.
