Born in 1938 in the village of Haripur in the Madhubani district of Bihar, Krishnanand Jha displayed an early interest in art. Guided by his artist mother, who practiced Mithila painting, and his Tantric priest father, Jha began painting Tantric scenes. His early paintings portrayed variations of the Goddess Kali as well as events from the Ramayana. Most of Jha’s work engages with the feminine aspects of Tantric symbolism, like the goddess Chinnmasta. Jha’s interest in portraying goddesses led him to pursue an education in Sanskrit, so that he could better understand the Mahavidya texts. Jha was one of the first male artists to explore this feminine side of Tantric art.
A prolific artist and writer, Krishnanand Jha’s work has been published in books such as Madhubani Paintings by Upendra Thankur and Mithila Paintings’ Evolution: An Art Form by the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. Jha’s work was also part of a landmark film about Mithila painters made by the American researcher and collector, Professor Raymond Owens. His paintings form a part of important international collections like those of the Berkeley Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Seattle Asian Art Museum.
