This Indian painter accompanied Gendun Choephel on a trip to southern Tibet in 1938. Choephel, a Tibetan monk, left an indelible mark on Tibetan culture and became a figure of identification for a younger generation of Tibetans in Tibet and in exile. His intellectual curiosity led him to challenge the ancient traditions of old Tibet. Having been associated with this rebellious monk, Krishna Kanwal explored cultural, political and social issues that were of deep concern to the former. In the process he sought inspiration and created works, Gendun Choephel in Sakya monastery, Tibet and Chang woman in Lhasa, Tibet, to name a couple. Krishna Kanwal especially became known for his watercolor 'views' and mountainscapes. His travels brought for him much reputation initially as an artist, depicting people and places especially in the mountainous areas in Bhutan, Sikkim and Tibet. His marriage in 1941 to artist Devayani Krishna was followed by extended spells of travel from Khyber to Bengal, Chennai, and the Himalayan Sikkim. He started exhibiting all over India since 1942. In 1947 he participated in an international exhibition in London. Between 1951-52 he held exhibitions at Rome, Oslo, and Stockholm. He studied graphics in Paris, in 1952-53 and became Head of the Art Department Modern School, New Delhi. Between 1955 and 1974 he participated in major international exhibitions for graphics and paintings. In 1976, he was honored by the Lalit Kala Academy and elected a Fellow as well. He had several one-man shows with the Kumar Gallery, Delhi since 1959. His film on Tibet at the time of the Coronation of the present Dalai Lama is a precious document. Most of Krishna Kanwal’s paintings are in public or private collections in India apart from selected prestigious collections internationally.
