Born in Mumbai in 1968, Julius Macwan completed his Bachelor’s degree in fine art at the Sir J.J. School of Art there, later moving to Chennai where he founded the Julius Macwan Institute of Fine Arts and Design in 1997. He returned to Mumbai for his first solo exhibition in 2004, and has exhibited his work in solo and group shows all over the country since.
His most recent exhibition, ‘The Death of Magic’ was held at the Stainless Gallery, New Delhi, in 2008. The artist’s other solo shows include 'J’, presented by Ashish Balram Nagpal Galleries at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, in 2007; 'The Hierophant – The Hip In Red And Mauve' at the Museum Gallery, Mumbai, in 2005; 'The Antithesis' presented by Apparao Gallery at Triveni Gallery, New Delhi, in 2004; and ‘The Hermit’ presented by Apparao Galleries at Museum Gallery, Mumbai, also in 2004, among others.
Macwan has taken part in several group exhibitions, the most recent being 'Manthan' presented by Nitanjali Art Gallery at Galerie Romain Rolland, New Delhi, in 2009; ‘Kaleidoscope’ at Tradition Art, Mumbai, in 2008; and Harsh Goneka’s A-MAZ-ING at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, also in 2008, for which he produced the ‘Pieta’, a reference to Michelangelo’s sculpture of the same name, and the only painting in his ’Death of Magic’ series of works. In 2007, Macwan spent a year as Artist in Residence at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad.
The artist lives and works in Mumbai.
