Jagdish Dey was born in 1942 in Bangladesh, and graduated from College of Art. He has been teaching at his institute since 1965.
"My early paintings were transformed landscapes, based on my flights of fancy. It showed in a surrealistic fashion, cloud like forms ethereally suspended in air. The whole situation was like a dream, where the real and unreal coexist.
My present phase is one which gradually shifted from these Dreamflowers to figurative representations sometimes in the last eighties. I have painted man and woman in a variety of moods. Another constant feature in my works is the peacock. It is seen in the company of female figures, and acts as the means of communication, between the figures."
Sometimes it also takes the form of a flying female figure in dreamlike mystic situations which helps create a harmonious relationship to the surroundings.
For the last three decades, he has regularly participated in all major exhibitions in India and abroad.
He lives and works in Delhi.
