Delphin Enjolras was born on May 13, 1857, in the historic town of Courcouron in the Ardèche region of Southern France.

The artist began his formal education in painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, training under artists Jean-Léon Gérôme, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret and Gustave Claude Etienne Courtois. He then studied at the Ecole de Dessin de la Ville de Paris under the supervision of well known watercolourist Gaston Gérard.

During the early phases of his career, the artist mainly painted landscapes, but it was his later portraits of women engaged in everyday activities like reading or arranging flowers, and his Academic and Orientalist nudes for which he achieved widespread popularity. These intimate works were largely interior scenes executed in oil, pastel or watercolour. They were exquisitely coloured and illuminated, most often by lamplight to infuse them with a sense of intimacy and sensuality.

Enjolras regularly exhibited at the Salons of the Sociètè des Artistes Français beginning in 1889, and in 1901, he was elected a member of the society, where he continued to show his work till 1909. In the later years of his career, the artist also enjoyed fame as a popular society portraitist, particularly renowned for his work in pastels. Major collections of his paintings are held by the Musèe du Puy and Musèe d’Avignon.

The artist passed away in 1945.
