Debanjan Roy effortlessly uses figurative sculpture as a means to express himself, and seems to enjoy this three-dimensional medium, over any other, for its explicit ability to mimic as well as distort the real and the familiar, depending on the manipulation of the artist. Roy’s index of materials ranges from wood and bronze to his recent use of fiberglass. The artist sometimes combines materials, which are worked on by different methods, enhancing the dynamics of his pieces. Moving away from classical figuration, and changing the trend, if one has been defined, Roy’s work advances towards a more global sculptural idiom, referencing various artistic traditions including Pop and Shock art.
Born in 1975, Debanjan Roy completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharti University, Santiniketan, in 1998, and his Master’s degree from the same institution in 2000. He has participated in a number of solo shows including those held at Gandhara Gallery, Kolkata, in 2007; and at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 2002. Amongst his group shows, the most recent are ‘Who Knew? Mr. Gandhi’ at Aicon Gallery, London, in 2008; ‘Eastern Edge’ at Aicon Gallery, New York, in 2007; ‘New Wave in Bengal Art’ at Gallery Akar Prakar, Kolkata, in 2005; and ‘Tale of Two Cities’ at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata and Mumbai, and Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2004. In the year 2000, Roy received the Best Sculpture Award from the West Bengal State Academy, an award he was honoured with the previous year from Rabindra Bharti University.
The artist lives and works in Kolkata.
