Birju Maharaj was born Brijmohan Nath Mishra in 1937 in United Provinces, British India. He was born to a family of dancers where he trained under his father Acchan Maharaj and uncle Shambhu Maharaj, of the Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Lucknow, from a young age.
He went to Delhi to teach Kathak as a teenager. He later based his practice as a guru out of the legendary Kathak Kendra in Delhi. He was noted for bringing the dance form to international notice. As a dancer, his abhinaya, the art of expression in classical Indian dance, and rhythm brought him great acclaim. He also choreographed for Indian movies like Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977) and Devdas (2002).
Birju Maharaj was also an artist whose style evolved from perfunctory sketches into paintings that translated the fluidity of his dance practice onto canvas with his brushstrokes. Kiran Chopra, who curated an exhibition of his works at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, has remarked, “To achieve the kind of strength that he has achieved in the anatomy, I feel, is very interesting. These works don’t feel like they have been created by a novice or that it’s extempore. Here was an artiste who was also a very keen observer. The paintings have their fluidity intact even when they are abstract.”
Birju Maharaj died on 17 January 2022.
