At first glance, Annaraya S. Hangargi’s art seems deeply disturbing, with its dark overtones and fiendish protagonists. Using red, black and gray, Hangargi manages to shock, leaving the viewer to unravel the mysteries of his work. Deeply influenced by the current social situation, and our growing negligence towards environmental and health issues, the artist chooses his art as a medium of expression.
Highlighting man’s growing indifference, Hangargi looks back towards traditional beliefs, both questioning them and gaining inspiration from them. While the crow in his art is eerie and haunting, his use of the bird is a reaction to an age old religious belief. Similarly, religious symbols like the ‘swastika’ which is the symbol for peace and harmony, when rendered in bold red turns into a menacing sign that is capable of destruction.
Born in 1977 in Gulbarga in Karnataka, Hangargi received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the MMK College of Visual Art at Gulbarga University, Karnataka in 2000. In 2002, he received his Master’s degree, with a specialization in graphics, from Kalabhavan at the Vishwa Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal.
Hangargi’s art has been featured as a part of several group shows including ‘Aronya’ organized by Reflection of Another Day (RAD) at Gallery CB-56, Kolkata, in 1998; and several others at galleries like the Karnataka Lalit Kala Akademi, Bangalore; Saga Art College, Japan; and Kitab Mahal Art Gallery, Mumbai. He has also participated in the All India Drawing Exhibition at Punjab Lalit Kala Akademi, Chandigarh, in 2002; the Annual Exhibition at the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 2001-02; and the Inter – University Exhibition, Gulbarga, in 1998. In 2000, the artist was awarded the K.K. Hebbar Award for Graphics; and in 2001, he was awarded at the All India Annual Art Exhibitions at both the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and the West Bengal Sate Academy, Kolkata.
