Anita Khemka graduated in English literature before turning to photography in 1996. Her workfocuses largely on people living on the margins of society. As a photographer, she has worked extensively with sexual minorities, prostitutes, mentally handicapped individuals and AIDS/HIV positive subjects. Through her photographs, she aims to alter attitudes towards these communities by presenting the individuality of her subjects in a sensitive and nuanced manner.
Khemka’s work was the subject of a documentary, Between the Lines: India’s Third Gender, which was directed in 2005 and shown at the Locarno Film Festival, in Locarno, Switzerland, in the same year. The film explored the lives of India’s hijra or eunuch community, which has long been ostracised and relegated to the margins. Her work has been widely exhibited in India and has traveled to London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Melbourne and Thailand. Khemka’s archive is represented by Photoink in New Delhi.
