"Lines, whether soft or wild, are actually very important to me, since they move around the whole space and are a little like music within a space."
Currently living and working in New Delhi, Anandamoy Banerji is one of the newest and brightest faces of Indian printmaking today. Already very well established in the field, he is a founding member of the Indian Printmakers Guild. But even though printmaking is admittedly one of his favourite mediums, it is definitely not all that Banerji has dabbled in or wants to try his hand at. This multifaceted artist has already mastered almost all the different media that have been available to him, and has also created his own special media and surfaces by mixing and matching whatever he could lay his hands on, no matter how diverse the ingredients were.
All of his works however, no matter which surface or medium, are well known for their innovative use of vivid colours and the experimental way in which the artist employs the line. When asked, Banerji admits that he does prefer oils and soft pastels after printmaking, but this hasn’t ever curtailed him from constantly trying to find a new media for himself.
Whilst his inspiration in choosing media comes from a thirst to try his hand at everything available and master what was previously unknown to him, Banerji has very different reasons when it comes to his choice of subject. He believes that it is ones own personal experiences that need to come out onto the canvas. But they need to come out in some way that every viewer can relate to them. Attempting to do this, Banerji ties his own complex experiences to simpler, universal and wide-ranging subjects like love, anger, trust, infidelity and ultimately mercy.
When asked about the ever-present female figure in his work, the response is simple. As the woman represents ‘prakriti’, or nature and all of her creations, as well as traditions and culture, she is an ideal starting point to begin his portrayal of universal themes and experiences.
Anandamoy Banerji was born in Kolkatta in 1959. He trained at the Government College of Art in New Delhi and at Viswa Bharati University in Shantiniketan, Kolkatta. He has been honoured with both the National Award from the Lalit Kala Academy, and the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award. In 1997 Banerji was chosen to visit the United Kingdom as a teacher and student of art on a Charles Wallace Trust Fellowship, and spent six months doing this at the Camberwell College of Arts in London.
Anandamoy Banerji’s works have been shown in such major international exhibitions as the Asia Biennale (Dacca, 1983), the International Prints Exposition (Taipei, 1989 and Majdanku, Poland, 1997) and the Norwegian Print Biennale (Fredrikstad, 1993). He enjoys pride of place in prestigious permanent collections like those of India’s National Gallery of Modern Art, the Lalit Kala Academy, Kala Bhavan, and also in many private collections in India, Poland, Germany, and the United States.
