Born in 1976, Amit Kumar Jaiswal has numerous and wide ranging interests. The last of several degrees he completed was a Master’s in Painting from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 2004. He also has another Master’s degree in the same field from the Benares Hindu University, where he also completed his Bachelor’s degree in 1999. Jaiswal has also completed short term courses in photography, printing and design, and textile design.
Amit Kumar Jaiswal’s work is a snapshot of contemporary city life. Crowded buildings that seem unreal are common motifs in his painting. However, even though these are brightly painted and jutting out at odd angles, they do not appear ghastly or intimidating; the artist manages to convey disorder in an orderly manner, perfectly capturing the organized chaos that urban living is. This is possibly a result of Jaiswal’s use of a wide range of colour, which gives his work a child-like appeal. Modes of transport are another important motif in the artist’s work. From rickshaw pullers to cars, to buses, these images portray both progress and a sense of moving in another direction than one presently is.
The artist has had several solo exhibitions, the most recent one being at the Museum Gallery, Mumbai, in 2007. He has also had shows at Art Entrance Gallery, Mumbai, in 2006; Dhoomimal Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2005; Krishna Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2004; and the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, in 2001. Jaiswal also had a solo show of his work at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 2004. Apart from these, he has been a part of several group shows, including ‘Summer Rites’ at Gallery Beyond, Mumbai, in 2006; and ‘Saransh’ at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Benares Hindu University, in 1999. The artist was awarded the Best Painting Award at Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, in 2004.
