Abul Hisham was born in Thrissur, Kerala in 1987. He received his BFA in Painting from Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur, Kerala and his MFA in Painting from S N School of Arts, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad.
In his own words, his work “explores the notions of desire, death and memory” and their relationship to the social and cultural spaces we occupy. His existential art draws from the Safavid, Mughal, Rajput and Deccani artistic traditions. He has described working with his preferred medium of soft pastel as “sculpting from dust” which recalls the Christian and Islamic belief that humans come from dust and return to it at the end of their lives.
Hisham has held several solo shows includingDOMINATION at Kashi Art Gallery, Kochi in 2010, New Works at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai in 2014, and Recitation at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai in 2019.
He has participated in multiple group exhibitions like DWELLING, 10th Anniversary Show curated by Ranjit Hoskote at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai in 2017, Nine Painters from Kerala at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Mumbai in 2018, In the Land of Downside Up, curated by Nancy Adajania at Birla Academy Of Art And Culture, Kolkata in 2019, "De Jacht at Galerie de Schans, Amsterdam and An Ocean in Every Drop at Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, U.A.E in 2022.
