Subrata Kundu was born in Kolkata in 1969, and obtained his BVA from the Government College of Art & Craft there in 1986. He went on to obtain an MFA from New Delhi in 1989. Read More Subrata Kundu was born in Kolkata in 1969, and obtained his BVA from the Government College of Art & Craft there in 1986. He went on to obtain an MFA from New Delhi in 1989. He has held more than fifteen one-man showings of his works so far as well as participated in a number group shows over the last fourteen years.

In his own words Kundu describes his development as an artist, "I cannot clearly recall when the crooked lines of my unsteady hand of childhood took graceful and stately forms; or when my liking for lines and colours turned into my love and passion for art. Very soon my world of art came to be dominated by geometric shapes, the permutation combination of these shapes till the newly formed patterns came alive and began to express new things with each passing day. My passion for art introduced me to the fascinating world of great artists. Each acquaintance ushered in rays of knowledge."

Kundu`s works reflect the artist`s postmodern sensibility and his feelings of frustration when faced with urban problems like overcrowding and the erosion of all our basic values. In his mixed media pieces like "Concrete Jungle" 1 and 2, "Trapped" and "Extinct," Kundu manages to portray all of this fear and frustration in totally non-figurative pieces, created by the putting together of lines and other geometric forms in a very visually pleasing manner.

This artist is also a multimedia graphic programmer and a professional website designer. He is in charge of the visualizing of web sites designed by Cyberscape, an online firm based in Bangalore and Kolkata. Coming from a background in the arts, and proficient in using computers as a tool, he has a unique blend of artistic imagination and digital execution, making the websites he designs aesthetic and effective at the same time. Subrata Kundu has also worked in a prominent advertising agency in Kolkata. This artist has participated in many artist camps organized all over the country, and has also received awards and recognition from bodies like the Indian Society of Oriental Art, the West Bengal State Academy and the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society.

The artist passed away on September 5, 2010
