Born on 8th October 1926, Biren De obtained his diploma in Fine Art from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta, in 1949. Subsequently, he was a lecturer at the College of Art, New Delhi, from 1952-63. In 1959 De was awarded a Fulbright Grant and he spent the following year living and working in New York.
