Playful and childlike may be the first words that come to mind on encountering Amritah Sen’s works, but a closer examination reveals a deeper, fuller meaning to them. Sen’s watercolours and collages on paper generally involve simplistically rendered animals – most often wild creatures – peeping out from behind furniture and walls. While a red blotch may form one zebra’s stomach, another has two heads, and yet another is half blue. Her unabashedly humorous combinations of characters and environments offer the viewer several possible narratives and metaphorical readings.
Born in 1973, Sen completed her Bachelor’s degree in Painting from Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan, in 1997, and her Master’s degree from the same institution in 1999. In 1996, she was awarded a National Scholarship from the Government of India in the field of Visual Art. The artist’s solo shows include ‘Hide and Seek’ at Project 88, Mumbai, in 2008; ‘Fire Somewhere…’ at Gandhara Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2007; ‘The Thin Line’ at Anant Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2007; and ‘No Man’s Land’ at Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, in 2006. Sen’s work has been exhibited in numerous group shows including most recently ‘Crossroads’ at Anant Art Gallery, Kolkata, in 2007; ‘New Wave in Bengal Art’ at Gallery Akar Prakar, Kolkata, in 2005; and 'City of Joy’ at Priyasri Art Gallery, Mumbai, in 2005.
The artist lives and works in Kolkata.
