Nandi
Tamil Nadu20th...
View Dimensions Nandi or Nandikeshvara is a bull vahana (vehicle) of Shiva. Temples dedicated to Shiva usually have a Nandi seated at the entrance. Passing temple visitors touch or apply ash on its head to receive blessings. This brass Nandi is made in hollow casting form, a very unique and difficult technique in which the metal is poured in the mould and allowed to cool until a shell is formed. The remaining liquid metal is poured out to leave a hollow. This figure was used in processions with Shiva and Parvati placed on its back. Notice the beautifully engraved jewellery motifs on the crest and the back of the figure. The head of the Nandi displays signs of it being used by devotees as they passed by.

Horse
Gujarat20th centuryPolychromed...
View Dimensions Horse figures such as the present lot are used as decorative parts of ceremonial temple chariots that carry representations of Hindu deities around the streets of the temple on festival days and auspicious occasions. This figure is made from solid teak wood, hand-carved in two parts from the centre. The figure is hollow from the inside, providing enough room for it to be used as a secret compartment to store temple jewellery. Beautiful hand-painted garlands can be seen on the horse’s crest and wheels are attached to the base of its hooves. The figure has been painted with vegetable colour and displays a wonderful patina that is testimony of it being used.
