Opaque Watercolour heightened with gold on Paper

Mewar, c. 1700

Image: 9.5 x 8.5 in (23.75 x 21.25 cm)
Folio: 10 x 9 in (25 x 22.5 cm)

This miniature possibly belongs to the Sarangadharapaddhati album. This album is part of the Subhasitas, a loose collection of poems written in epigrammatic verses, which deals with themes such as love, detachment and wisdom.

The inscription on top of the folio reads: "I think this animal [horse] to be illusory. Do not bring it here, though it seems to stand there sent by our own people. Indeed, one's own shadow is not of any use when shelter is needed from the scorching sun."
